  • "I can’t say enough good things about our impression of the day. Our kiddo is so happy, calm, enthusiastic, regulated (complete 180 from after a day at regular kindergarten), and we’re hearing so many more stories about his day. Honestly, if you offered this more, we’d sign up and go hybrid nature school + LYKKE."

    Parent

  • “He’s been asking since Monday if it’s Thursday yet.”

    Parent

  • “I like to use my imagination and there’s very little imagination at school, there’s just the teacher’s imagination…. That’s why I like Thursday school because it’s free. There’s no listening time, we can do imagination all day. Well there is lots of listening, but also listening to ME!””

Our Program

Our day is filled with play, stories, creation + pure joy

Soft Start
Kiddos arrive anytime after 9 a.m.
Free play gives kids time to settle in and feel grounded before we come together.

Community Circle
We gather for a shared experience - whether it’s a story, a song, something playful. We value time together and listening to one another.

Shared Snack + Meals
We learn to set the table, sit together, and share food over conversation.

Creative Learning
Kids bring their ideas to life using a variety of materials - whether drawing, painting, construction and more. We have fun wondering about the world and seeking answers.

Flow of the Day

So it’s “just” play?!

Yes, and some of the greatest leaders
in education worldwide are huge supporters of play. We are too.

FAQs

“Are kids in the program home schooled?

No, actually all of the kids currently participating in our program are in regular kindergarten classes - in neighbourhood schools. Their families have chosen for them to visit LYKKE Kids one day a week so they can have time in a calm, small group setting that nurtures their interests, needs, and curiosity! And we’re hearing that teachers have been supportive of their decision.

Can kids “miss” a day of kindergarten each week?

Families have shared so many positives of their kiddos participating in Creative, Curious + Kind one day per week. Kiddos count the days until their “LYKKE day.” Parents love that their kiddos come home excited, filled with stories, and feeling good.

Can we join part way through the year?

Yes, of course! If we have openings, we’re happy to offer these spots on a pro-rated basis.

Interesting Facts

  • Kids in Finland begin compulsory, formal education at age 7 (in Canada, some kids begin at 3 years old).

  • Finland consistently ranks high in global education assessments like PISA for overall student achievement, known for top-tier reading, math, and science scores. Its’ system emphasizes highly trained teachers (almost all educators have a Masters degree) and learning is student-centered.

  • Educators in Canada regularly visit European countries (like Finland, Denmark, and Italy) as a part of study groups - to learn more about their play-based education systems.

  • These European countries have later starts to formal academics (begin at age 6-7), they highly value outdoor and unstructured play, have strong teacher training, focus on social-emotional development and trust in children’s natural curiosity.

  • Children from these countries often surpass peers from more academically pressured systems

  • In Toronto, the Play Learning Lab is run at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/University of Toronto. Play is valued at highly respected, leading post secondary institutions responsible for teacher education, namely graduate studies in education

  • and it’s interesting how Forest Schools in Denmark are a well-established, mainstream part of early childhood education, not an alternative or niche model. For ages 3-6 (before formal schooling begins), children participate in forest kindergartens. Highly trained educators facilitate and observe these publicly supported programs that prioritize play, nature and wellbeing. These programs create confident, capable, socially skilled children.
